Anmeldung: register your address

Required within two weeks after moving in.

Everyone who moves into a flat in Germany must register their address at the local registration office (Bürgeramt / Einwohnermeldeamt) within two weeks.

What you need

• Passport
• Confirmation from your landlord (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
• Registration form (often available online)

Why it matters

• You get a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). You need it for your bank account, residence permit and more.
• Your tax ID (Steuer-ID) is sent to you by post a few weeks later. Your employer needs it.

Appointments in big cities are often booked out. Book as early as possible, ideally before you arrive.
