Blocked account explained
Why you need it, how much, and how it works.
Open in the free Doorstep appA blocked account (Sperrkonto) proves to the German embassy that you can pay for your living costs. Most students and job seekers need one for the visa.
How it works
- You open the account online from India with an approved provider.
- You transfer the full amount for one year.
- You receive a blocking confirmation for your visa application.
- After you arrive, the provider pays out a fixed amount every month to your normal German bank account.
Amounts 2026
- Students: €11,904 per year, paid out at €992 per month
- Opportunity Card: €13,092 per year, paid out at €1,091 per month
The money stays yours. "Blocked" only means you cannot withdraw it all at once. Providers charge set-up and monthly fees, so compare before you choose.
