Living in Germany
Bringing your family
Spouse and children, Kita, school, Kindergeld and Elterngeld.
Open in the free Doorstep appMany people want their spouse and children to follow. Germany makes this possible if some conditions are met.
Family reunion visa
- Your spouse and children apply at the German mission in India.
- You usually need enough income and enough living space for the family.
- Spouses of EU Blue Card holders and of skilled workers usually do not need to show German skills. In other cases, basic German (A1) is often required. Check the rules for your visa type.
Children
- Children have a legal right to a Kita (daycare) place from their first birthday. Register early – waiting lists are long.
- School is compulsory and free at public schools.
Money for families
- Kindergeld (child benefit): €259 per child per month in 2026, applied for at the Familienkasse.
- Elterngeld (parental allowance): replaces part of your net income for up to 12–14 months after birth.
Birth of a child in Germany
Register the birth at the registry office (Standesamt). Then apply for an Indian passport for your child at the Indian Embassy or Consulate.
