Open in the free Doorstep appThe first days decide how smooth everything else goes. This order works for most people.
Day 1–2
- Get a German SIM card. Prepaid cards need an ID check (video call or in the shop).
- Ask your landlord for the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation). You need it for registration.
- Book your Anmeldung (address registration) appointment. You must register within 14 days after moving in.
Day 3–5
- Open a bank account. Some online banks work before registration, many branches need the registration certificate.
- Get a Deutschlandticket for buses and trains (€63 per month in 2026) – students usually get the semester ticket.
- Make sure your health insurance is active. Students need a membership certificate for enrolment.
Within the first weeks
- Your tax ID (Steuer-ID) arrives by post after registration. Your employer needs it.
- Book an appointment at the foreigners' office (Ausländerbehörde) for your residence permit, before your visa expires.
- Register for the broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) – one fee per flat.
