Living in Germany
Doctors, emergencies and health
How the health system works and whom to call.
Open in the free Doorstep appEveryone in Germany must have health insurance. With it, most doctor visits are covered.
Important numbers
- 112: emergency (ambulance, fire brigade) – free from every phone
- 116117: medical on-call service when your doctor's practice is closed, and help to find an appointment
- 110: police
Finding a doctor
- Start with a general practitioner (Hausarzt). They refer you to specialists if needed.
- Many practices can be booked online. Filter for doctors who speak English or Hindi.
- Bring your health insurance card to every appointment.
When you are sick
- Tell your employer on the first day.
- From the 4th day (sometimes earlier if your employer asks), you need a sick note from your doctor. It is sent electronically to your insurance.
Pharmacies
Pharmacies (Apotheke) sell medicines. At night and on Sundays there is always an emergency pharmacy open nearby.
Dentist
Regular check-ups are covered by public health insurance. Some treatments need extra payment – ask before.
