Incoming insurance explained

Health cover for your visa and your first weeks.

For your visa you must show health insurance that covers you from the day you arrive. German public health insurance usually only starts when you enrol at university or start your job. Incoming insurance closes this gap.

What it covers

• Doctor and hospital costs in Germany from your arrival
• Accepted by the German missions for the visa application
• Typically for the first weeks or months, until your German health insurance starts

Good to know

• Students under 30 usually switch to public health insurance (GKV) when they enrol.
• Language course students and people over 30 often need private or special insurance.
