Living in Germany
Leaving Germany
Deregistration, contracts, pension – a clean exit.
Open in the free Doorstep appWhether you move back to India or to another country – a few steps save you trouble and money later.
Before you leave
- Deregister your address (Abmeldung) at the citizens' office, at the earliest one week before and at the latest two weeks after moving out.
- Cancel your contracts in time: flat (usually 3 months' notice), phone, internet, gym, insurance.
- Deregister from the broadcasting fee with your deregistration certificate.
- Keep your German bank account open until your deposit and last salary have arrived.
Your pension contributions
You may be able to keep your contributions for a later German pension (which can also be paid to India) or apply for a refund. Get free advice from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung before you decide.
Your residence permit
Most residence permits expire if you stay outside Germany for more than 6 months. If you might come back, ask the foreigners' office before you leave.
Use the "Leaving Germany" checklist and the cancellation letters in the menu.
